In Brittia, a long wall was built, and the climate and soil and everything else is not alike on the two sides of it.”

It appears the North-South divide was a thing even 2,000 year ago! The Vindolanda Trust collections are amongst the finest in Europe and include many recently unearthed artefacts from the ongoing live archaeology located a short distance from Hadrian’s Wall.

And it’s through the archaeology including the incredible Vindolanda writing tablets (Britain’s top treasure as voted by the British Museum), that Studio MB were able to reveal the amazing stories of hundreds of known military and civilian people, living out real lives, on the northern frontier, 2,000 years ago.

The interior and exterior interpretation takes the visitor on a journey explaining these ‘Frontier Lives’ both military (on duty and off duty) and domestic. These central themes examine the life and times of a foreign occupying army and the civilian settlement that grew up around its presence. The messages explore garrison duties, training, health, pay, conditions, equipment, diet, clothing, family, race and religion.

What’s the story...

This is a story that allows the visitor to walk in the footsteps of known military and civilian people. Using the written accounts within the Vindolanda Tablets, we were able to present the astonishing lives and times of a community at the edge of empire.”

What the client said...

The Vindolanda Trust was very impressed with the client relationship that we were able to establish with Studio MB. They were ambitious and inspirational, leading to innovative and imaginative concepts. We also found that their ability to work firmly within the client parameters and budgets gave confidence to both client and funders which was exceptionally important.”
