A big city, with an airport too small to land on”

An aircraft carrier is a seagoing airbase, equipped with a full-length flight deck and facilities for carrying, deploying, and recovering aircraft. That's what it is, but what does it feel like?

Studio MB were tasked with upgrading the rather tired Aircraft Carrier Hall and turn it into a new experience that would leave visitors in awe of what they had seen. We looked at the whole visitor journey afresh, re-routing the visitor through five thematic zones, with each encounter designed to astonish and amaze. Visitors arrive via a helicopter transfer onto the flight deck of a carrier. There they find themselves surrounded by unique aircraft from the last 100 years, with a massive-scale AV projection running down the Port side. The visitor then enters the ship superstructure and into a large elevator that provides an immersive AV journey through the decks of this city and sea.

What’s the story...

This is a dramatic story of a city at sea, presenting the lives and times of the crew on board and the significance of the events that take place.”

What the client said...

We were delighted to appoint Studio MB for this very important project. Their bold interpretive approach and design solutions were a great match for the brief, showing considerable insight into our subject matter and story. Studio MB worked with us throughout to deliver the experience both on time and on budget, realising the project’s potential and enabling us to launch prior to the Summer holidays.”
